Uluwatu Run Club: A Trail Runner's Guide to Karang Boma Cliff's Three Routes

Most people find Copy House because they're looking for a sunset. Some find it because they've just run to it.

Uluwatu Run Club isn't a scheduled club with a start whistle and a group chat you have to join weeks in advance. It's simpler than that: three self-guided routes that start and end at Copy House on Karang Boma Cliff, open to anyone, any day, at no cost. You choose the distance that matches your legs and your mood, run it on your own time, and finish where you started — with a coffee or a cold coconut waiting, a sarong spread out on the cliff edge, and the Indian Ocean doing what it does at the end of the day.
The Three Routes
Easy — 7.5km on quiet roads. A flatter route along Uluwatu's back roads, with gentle elevation and light traffic. Good for a first visit, a recovery run, or easing back into distance after time off. See Route
Moderate — 5km through jungle and clifftop. Shorter but tougher underfoot: jungle trail and clifftop terrain that passes close to Uluwatu Temple before looping back. Uneven ground, better views, more concentration required. See Route
Extreme — 5.3km+ to Nyang Nyang Beach. The route for runners who want the descent as much as the run. It drops roughly 180 metres to Nyang Nyang Beach, including stretches of beach sand, before climbing back up to the cliff. Steep, sandy, and worth planning water for.
None of the three are marshalled or marked with course flags — they're recommended routes on existing roads and trails, not a closed circuit. Treat them the way you'd treat any trail run in unfamiliar terrain: tell someone your route, carry water, and be extra cautious on the clifftop and jungle sections after rain, when the ground turns slick fast. See Route
Who It's For
All fitness levels. There's no pace requirement and no sign-up sheet for solo runners — you just show up and go. Groups of 8 or more can book ahead (48 hours' notice) for a coordinated run, and Copy House can open outside its normal 3pm–7:30pm hours for group bookings and retreats.
Sunrise Runs, Yoga, and the Coffee After
Because the standard routes are self-guided, nothing stops an early riser from running the clifftop stretch at sunrise instead of sunset — the view earns its name either way. For groups wanting a fuller morning, Copy House also arranges sunrise yoga-plus-run-plus-coffee packages, popular with retreats staying nearby on the Bukit.
Whatever time you run, the ritual at the end doesn't change: back at Copy House, a specialty Indonesian coffee or an ice-cold coconut, sarong down on the grass at the cliff edge, and the ocean in front of you. It's the same wind-down the venue is built around for its sunset guests — you've just earned it a different way.
Before You Go
Routes are self-guided — there's no fixed start time for solo runners; run when it suits you.
Groups of 8+: message Copy House on WhatsApp (+62 857 3810 0899) at least 48 hours ahead.
Bring water, especially for the Nyang Nyang Beach route — there's no aid station along the way.
Copy House itself is open 3pm–7:30pm daily; outside those hours (sunrise runs, early groups), coordinate access in advance.
Dogs are welcome on the clifftop afterward, leashed, if you're running with one.
Come for the run. Stay for the sunset — or, if you timed it right, the sunrise.
